Josef Albers' "Homage Full 1962 (Blue / Red)" is a masterful exploration of color interaction and geometric abstraction. Part of his famous "Homage to the Square" series, this work features nested squares in varying shades of blue and red that seem to vibrate against each other. The composition consists of precisely calculated concentric squares, with a deep blue outer square surrounding inner squares that transition from cooler to warmer tones, culminating in a rich red center.

The piece demonstrates Albers' lifelong study of color theory and perception, showing how colors can appear to advance, recede, and interact depending on their adjacency to other hues. The careful balance between the cool blues and warm reds creates a subtle optical effect, where the central square appears to float above the surface while the outer squares recede into space.

Created in 1962, this work exemplifies Albers' systematic approach to artistic creation and his influential teachings at the Bauhaus, Black Mountain College, and Yale University. The painting's precise geometric format serves as a laboratory for exploring the relative nature of color perception, demonstrating how the same color can appear differently depending on its context.

Painter and poet, sculptor, and teacher Josef Albers was one of the most influential figures in 20th-century abstract art, and his theoretical work is still a cornerstone of Western approaches to art education. Albers both studied and taught at the Bauhaus before emigrating to the US in 1933, where he headed art departments first at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, then at Yale, and taught the likes of Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Eva Hesse, and Ray Johnson. Albers’ Homage to the Square series of paintings, begun in 1950, remains his most influential work.
