The George Nelson Marshmallow Sofa is widely recognized as a brilliant idea that was ahead of its time both aesthetically and technically. This was a contributing factor in the reason why only a couple hundred were initially constructed. Through George Nelson's innovation of form and function, this design is considered a permanent icon of the modern classic era. The Marshmallow Sofa is constructed with a black lacquered tubular frame and 18 cushions. Each cushion is individually upholstered and can be of different colors. Please indicate desired colors and patterns in the notes section when placing your order.
During the 1940s while he was the Design Director at Herman Miller, George Nelson collaborated with Ray and Charles Eames, Harry Bertoia, and Isamu Noguchi on a number of projects. It was a unique time during Herman Miller's life when the company was trying new and exciting designs without worrying about the commercial viability of the design group's designs. While at Herman Miller, George Nelson set the new standards for corporate imaging, logos, and graphical presentation. Though not personally responsible for many of the designs that he has been credited with, George Nelson did manage a highly creative and innovative group of designers. He has been credited with such modern pieces as the Marshmallow Sofa, the Nelson Bench, the Nelson Ball Clock, and the Coconut Chair.
George Nelson's influence as a teacher, writer, and publisher of designs continues to influence shape color, and design today.
