Though the absolute origin of the Chesterfield sofa remains somewhat of a mystery to historians, it is thought to be identified with the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, Phillip Stanhope.

Over the past 300 years, the Chesterfield sofa and armchairs have changed considerably, with much of the current aesthetic coming from the Victorian age when deep buttons and over-quilted cushions were introduced.
